Buying A Computer

When you are looking at buying a computer, an off the shelf configuration is usually more than adequate. There is a very good site available at e-businessguide.gov.au, which has suggestions for a business level configuration. Of course you can also speak to computer sales people directly at Dell and ask their advice.

In the 1980"s when the PC revolution began most computers were configured with about 8-16 MB of ram. RAM or random access memory, is like the computing muscle of a computer when performing tasks, in contrast to hard drive memory which is the total overall capacity of a computer to hold information. Processor development has seen a massive growth in the capabilities of computers since then, today in 2008 it is common for computers to use more than 1 GB of ram. What that means is that today"s standard computers have enormous power to perform actions very quickly. The twist to our story is that when looking at the Internet we want the information load to be at its very minimum.

When executing task on the computer the more information you can use to generate your result the better. For instance you might scan a photo at 1000dpi, that photo then contains an enormous amount of information about the colours used, you may want this level of information if you are taking your image to a printer for processing. In contrast when scanning for the internet you will want the image to hold an absolute minimum of information, firstly because you need to transfer the result to the end viewer as quickly as possible. A large image of say 1 MB would take a long tome to download to a browser, an image of 3 KB would transfer very quickly. So when we look at computers we can generally assume we want a maximum of information in contrast when look at the Internet we want a minimum of information.
