Hyper Text Markup Language
When referring to Web design, what we are talking about is the general appearance and purpose of the site. The basic tool for web development is HTML, (Hyper Text Markup Language).
HTML is a tool for giving instruction to text. Those instructions can be what style of font we see on the screen, or a more complex instruction like a link to another site. Therefore, some aspects of HTML relate to appearance and some towards purpose or function.
HTML has undergone a number of changes since its inception. For those not familiar with technical terms, HTML is like software that is released in versions. First there was SGML, then HTML 2.2 then HTML 3.2, HTML 4.0 led to HTML 4.1, and today the standard Webcore choose to use is XHTML 1.1. XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language) is a reconciliation of the previous versions of markup and it establishes the foundation of an extensible or expanded application know as XML of which XHTML is a subset.
XHTML is very different to HTML in what functions it perfoms. Remember HTML is a tool for giving instruction to text re appearance and to some extent purpose. XHTML extends that functionality, as a subset of XML. XML decscribes what the text means as well as what it looks like and its purpose. It accomadates the development of a Semantic Web, a Semantic Internet a subject we will not go into here only to say it is a major step in Internet maturity.
Cascading Style Sheets
Cascading Style Sheets compliment the format of XHTML . Here style can be attributed to headlines, passages of text, in fact every object on the screen, or the mobile phone or the overhead projector or the printer. So desgin has a lot more to do with looking good in more than one arena. It is important then to have a consistent look and feel throughout your entire web.
